What size should a wall art piece be?

The impact of a photograph does not depend solely on the subject. Its size also determines whether an image becomes a subtle accent or the defining focal point of a room.

Size in space

Small, medium, or large?

Room mockups help in better estimating proportions. Crucial factors are wall space, furniture width, and the desired effect of the picture.

Compact
Discreet · flexible

Compact

e.g. 20 × 30 cm · 30 × 40 cm

Ideal for smaller wall spaces, groupings of pictures, shelves, or areas where you want the motif to have a deliberately subtle effect.

Medium-sized
Present · versatile

Medium-sized

e.g. 40 × 60 cm · 60 × 90 cm

A versatile size for many living spaces. The motif gains significant presence without dominating the entire room.

Large format
Statement · impressive

Large format

e.g. 80 × 120 cm and larger

Large photographs become a central design element. Landscapes, aerial shots, and expressive animal portraits benefit particularly from this.

Rule of thumb

Orient yourself by the wall – not just by the picture.

Above a sofa, sideboard, or bed, a wall picture should clearly relate to the piece of furniture. A picture that is too small quickly looks lost on a large, empty surface.

About two-thirds as a guideline.

Above a piece of furniture, a picture width of approximately two-thirds the width of the furniture can be a good starting point. However, the exact effect always depends on the subject, format, and available wall space.

Viewing distance

Large pictures do not necessarily require large rooms.

A large-format photo can also work in a smaller room if the wall has a minimalist design. Detailed landscape and wildlife shots in particular benefit from allowing the image to occupy a larger space.

Format

Portrait, landscape, or panorama?

The orientation also influences the effect of the room. Landscape and panorama formats are particularly suitable for wide wall surfaces, while portrait formats emphasize narrow areas and vertical lines.

Portrait
Vertical

Portrait

Ideal for narrow wall spaces, gaps, and vertical architecture. Animal portraits also often work particularly well in portrait format.

Landscape
Classic · versatile

Landscape

Particularly harmonious above a sofa, sideboard, or bed. Landscape formats are excellent for scenery and wide wall spaces.

Panorama
Expanse · Panorama

Panorama

Wide panoramas emphasize the horizon and vastness and are particularly suitable for landscape, coastal, and mountain shots.
